Robert , being the oldest son of Thomas and Ann , joined the Church when his parents did in 1852 . He was 13 years old at the time. His parents determined to emigrate to the Valley but waited until after the birth of their sixth child. Robert 's maternal grandfather, David Davidson , travelled with his only child's family. He did not survive the difficult trip but died and was buried on the plains of Wyoming . Upon their arrival in the valley, they lived in Salt Lake until 1860 . Their home was similar to others of the time, a one-room log cabin located where the D & R G depot was later built. Robert learned the shoemaker's trade from his father in Scotland . President Young asked him to take charge of the shoeshop in the tithing office, and he continued to teach others the shoemaking trade. When Johnston 's Army came to the valley, Robert and his brother, David , stayed with the militia and later went to Echo Canyon . In 1859 , Robert and David went to Cache Valley and built a log home for their family. He became a farmer and taught his sons to be good farmers by buying farmland. As his sons grew older he "put them on the farms," to work and develop them. Robert was a bishop for 27 years. He was a trustee on the school board and remained active in the church and community all his life.

The Memorial in Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg-l'Avoue, is one of those erected by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to record the names of the officers and men who fell in the Great War and whose graves are not known. It serves the area enclosed on the North by the river Lys and a line drawn from Estaires to Fournes, and on the South by the old Southern boundary of the First Army about Grenay. It covers the period from the arrival of the II Corps in Flanders in 1914, to the eve of the Battle of Loos. | Source (S1146)
